Community Update: April 2025
🏉 A Note from Conor: Sir Clive Woodward Joins The Team!

I’m a geek about learning. I love it. One of the best things about owning a business is how much you have to learn – because there are so many problems that need to be solved 🤯.
As well as running Jones And Co. Styling Opticians, for the last 10 years I’ve also been running a business coaching organisation (called Optical Success Academy) for other independent opticians who want to learn how to run a great business, with a brilliant team, and customers who love them.
Basically, I take what I’ve learned and what we do at Jones And Co. and put it in a format that is easy to share and for others to grasp and put into action for themselves and their teams. As usual, the Jones And Co. team have been instrumental in us doing this really well and they have
inspired countless other opticians. We have a community of over 100 independent practices from all across the world.
So in order to keep bettering ourselves and innovating for our amazing clients at Jones And Co. I would like to share my latest hair-brained scheme with you – all in the name of providing you with an incredible customer experience.
I have hired Sir Clive Woodward to join the team. He had a good CV for starters and good references. As head coach, Sir Clive led the England rugby team to their historic 2003 World Cup Victory in Australia. He then joined the British Olympic Association as Team GB’s Director of Sport, culminating in London 2012 which was Team GB’s most successful Olympic Games.
Yesterday we closed early for a couple of hours and we had our first session with Sir Clive which was amazing. The whole Jones And Co. team are taking part (along with our Optical Success Academy members) and Clive will be working with us closely for the next six months on becoming a high performing team.
As with achieving anything in your life, the most important area is the area between your ears. That’s where Clive will be focused with us.
When Clive started his work with the England rugby team, he was brilliantly creative and innovative. The game had just become professional, so he was on a tight budget to achieve success. He wanted to make the changing rooms at Twickenham inspiring for the team but there was no money for a refurbishment, so he called the TV show “Changing Rooms” and offered them the chance to makeover Twickenham and film it all, in return for doing the work for free. Problem solved.
Clive noticed that his fastest player, Jason Robinson, kept getting past the opposition only for them to grab onto his baggy shirt and bring him down. So he called Nike, who were a sponsor and asked them to come up with a skin-tight rugby shirt for them. Now everyone wears them, but Clive was first.
Clive noticed that in the heat of the game, his players would sometimes not see all their teammates and miss the right pass. He had heard about a South African ex-hockey player who was doing some interesting work in the field of visual awareness so he hired her as a full-time member of the team to improve the visual awareness and peripheral vision of the players. Again, this is commonplace today but Clive was the first and always searching for weird and wonderful ways to help his team become the best in the world.
He also took the whole team for a couple of days combat training with the Royal Marines to help them think clearly under pressure. He asked the Royal Marines to NOT go easy on them but to treat them like fellow marines. So who knows what we’ll get up to working with Sir Clive?
Some of us may add some muscle. Gareth’s tackling may improve. I might start wearing skin-tight tops. But all that would only a be happy side effect to the real objective of delivering the best eyewear experience in the world.
It feels like a once in a lifetime opportunity to be coached by someone of Sir Clive’s calibre and the team and I are very excited. Watch this space.

Remembering Gai Gherardi – A True Original

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Gai Gherardi, co-founder of L.A. Eyeworks and one of the most joyful, colourful and creatively rebellious forces in the world of eyewear.
Gai, along with her friend and business partner Barbara McReynolds, helped redefine what eyewear could be. Loud, expressive, unapologetically personal—she gave people permission to be themselves, and then some. She didn’t just design glasses. She changed how people felt in them.
At Jones and Co., L.A. Eyeworks holds a special place. It was the first collection Conor brought in when he took over the practice, and our relationship with Gai and Barbara was always something we treasured. Meeting Gai at Silmo (the international eyewear fair in Paris ) over the years was always a highlight—she made us laugh, think, and feel like anything was possible (preferably while wearing something bright).
We’re proud to carry on sharing her work—and her spirit—through the frames that still make people light up when they try them on.
Here’s to a true original.
This photo was taken just this past September—Jess with Gai at Silmo, mid-laugh, surrounded by colour. It’s exactly how we’ll remember her
🕶️ The Ultimate Accessory

Few things update your look as effortlessly—and stylishly—as a great pair of sunglasses.
This month, we’re launching our 2025 sunglass collection, and it’s the most exciting selection we’ve ever had. New styles have just landed from California, Copenhagen, Antwerp, France, Japan, New York and beyond. We’re talking limited editions, exclusive colours, and frames you simply won’t find anywhere else.
The practice is full of sunglasses right now—more on display than we’ve ever had before. And we’ve already been having a lot of fun styling clients in their new sunnies.
To celebrate, we’re offering a FREE upgrade to polarised lenses (worth £125) with any sunglasses purchase made between Saturday 5th April and Saturday 10th May.
Polarised lenses give you full UV protection and cut through glare—perfect for driving, holidays, and bright spring days.
If your sunglasses are tired, out of date, or just not quite you, this is the moment to change that. Come and explore our biggest, boldest sunglasses collection to date, and find the pair you’ll love wearing all summer long.
🌿 Four Years of Giving Back – Thanks to You

We’ve just been re-certified by 1% for the Planet, which means we’ve now completed four years of donating 1% of our total revenue to environmental organisations—and 2025 marks the start of our fifth year.
In that time, we’ve donated over £55,000 to support some incredible work. This year, we’re proud to be supporting City of Trees, Keep Britain Tidy, and Groundwork—three brilliant organisations helping to make the UK a cleaner, greener place to live.
We recently had the pleasure of handing over the big cheques in person. It’s always lovely to meet the people behind the projects and see the impact your support is helping to make.
We’re able to do this because of the people who keep coming back to us—and keep telling their friends about us. So thank you. Every time you choose Jones and Co., you’re helping us support something bigger than just great eyewear.

🍕 A Slice of Naples (Just Around the Corner)

We love it when something new opens up in the neighbourhood—especially when it smells this good.
Just a few steps from the practice on Cross Street, Forbici has officially opened its doors, bringing with it master bakers from Naples, crisp Italian beers, and what they’re calling “the world’s most powerful pizza dough.”
Their signature biga dough (a traditional Italian pre-fermentation method that helps develop deeper flavour and a lighter texture) is made fresh every day using flour from Molini Pizzuti, then slow-proved for 12 hours to create that light, airy crust. And in true Neapolitan style, every pizza is served quartered and snipped with scissors—forbici means scissors in Italian, after all.
Expect all the Italian classics you know and love, plus a few Mancunian twists—like their limited-edition Lancashire Hotpot and Black Pudding pizza, a tribute to our Northern roots (and definitely one for the adventurous).
To wash it down, they’ve partnered with Italian brewery Amarcord and Manchester’s own Shindigger, offering crisp craft beers alongside proper Italian sodas like Polara Limonata and Lurisia Chinotto.
If you needed another excuse to visit your favourite opticians, this one comes with melted cheese.
🚲 Reminder: You Could Win a Brompton!

We’ve already had some amazing referrals—thank you!
