đŸ«˜A Public Service Announcement from Conor:
Be Careful Out There

Over the years, I’ve made many public service announcements in this newsletter in an attempt to make life easier to navigate for us all. Normally, these announcements are immediately preceded by some mishap by yours truly. These have included speeding tickets I didn’t deserve, gas leaks that nearly blew my kitchen up, eye drop-induced temporary blindness, wrongdoings committed against me, and an assortment of idiotic moments. Well, I have another one.

Catherine has gotten into eating a lot of beans recently. (Please, no jokes.) Red beans. Butter beans. White beans. Chickpeas. Black beans. You name it. She has fallen in love with a company called ‘The Bold Bean Co.’ for their posh beans. I would be too afraid to ask her if she loves me as much as those beans. They have these amazing recipes that are a taste sensation and are now a staple in the Heaney household. They are delicious.

Several weeks ago, on a Sunday evening, Catherine was preparing dinner, and she asked me to open the big glass jar of chickpeas. The lid was a bit tight. I said ‘No problem honey’ and swooped into action, keen to impress her with my strength and not let those beans steal my thunder.

That lid was really on there. Properly stuck. I sat at the kitchen table and flexed my biceps. To no avail. But Catherine wasn’t looking so it was fine. Ego still intact. I stood up and tensed my stomach and every muscle in my body and tried again. No joy.

I realised it was time to stop messing around, so I went under the sink to get the marigold gloves. To be sure, I put both of them on. And I squeezed with all my might. At this point, I was sweating, red in the face and cursing expletives at this mo?!*$ %@!*?& jar.

Catherine had now realised I wasn’t succeeding and asked me if I was ok. I just stood there panting. It was time to get medieval on this jar. I departed for the garage. In the garage I had all sorts of tools and also a pair of thicker black rubber gloves.

I won’t go into the gory details of what happened in the garage that day, and thankfully, no one could hear my screams, but I wrestled with that jar, at times on the floor, for a good 15 minutes. I ran it under boiling hot water. I ran it under freezing cold water.  And it still defied me. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghh!

I collected myself as best I could and walked back inside.

With eyes down and my head hung low, I admitted to my wife that I had failed and could not open this jar. Catherine simply took the jar and, in one smooth movement, pierced the lid with a corkscrew. The vacuum seal released, and the jar was open. Glorious chickpeas were her reward.

I could have cried. I didn’t know that was possible. I have never been defeated by a jar before. My hands were red, raw and a shaking wreck. The muscles in my right hand had formed into a claw shape, and I had to massage them back into life.

It is now weeks later, and my hand is still not right. I confided in some friends that I had sustained an injury while failing to open a jar of posh chickpeas, and they accused me of having the most middle-class injury they ever saw. Who needs friends, eh?

So I do recommend The Bold Bean Co. for great beans (www.boldbeanco.com) that taste superior in every way, but do not attempt to open these jars without a corkscrew nearby. They will rob you of your self-esteem, so don’t even try it. Corkscrew every time.

đŸƒâ€â™€ïž The Fastest Dispensing Optician in the West North

Taylor, our brilliant dispensing optician, took on the Manchester Marathon last month — and while the medal is impressive, it’s what happened on the course that really tells the story.

Around mile 24, just when most runners are digging deep to push through to the finish, Taylor came across another runner in serious distress. We’ll spare you the details (and let your imagination fill in the blanks), but it wasn’t pretty.
Without hesitation, she stopped and stayed with them for nearly 30 minutes, making sure they were okay before carrying on.

She sacrificed her chance to smash her personal best, but still crossed the line with a very respectable time of 5 hours and 2 minutes.

It’s the kind of thing that doesn’t show up on the results sheet, but says a lot about who she is. A true good Samaritan in running shoes.

She’s already signed up for the next one — and we’re excited to see what she can do when she’s not called into mid-marathon duty.

đŸ‡«đŸ‡· The New Anne et Valentin Collection Has Landed. Don’t Miss Out!

If you’ve ever tried on a pair of Anne et Valentin frames, you’ll know they don’t do ordinary.

Colour, shape, attitude, every piece is designed to be expressive, joyful and full of personality. Which is probably why they’ve become such a favourite here at Jones And Co.

The good news? We’ve just had a huge delivery, and the drawers are now overflowing with new styles. From ultra-light titanium to punchy acetate shapes and colours you never knew you needed — it’s one of the best drops we’ve had in a while.

A few of our favourites have already made their way out the door.

Whether you’re after something subtle or something that makes a statement, come and see what’s new before they’re gone.

đŸšČ Did You Know You Can Rent a Brompton Bike in Manchester?

We didn’t either, until recently! But it turns out there’s a Brompton Hire point right here in Manchester, just near Piccadilly. So if you’ve ever fancied whizzing around the city on one of those clever little folding bikes, now’s your chance. Just pick one up, take it for a spin, and see why so many people swear by them. There really is no better way to get around town.

And if you fall in love with it? You might just win one.

We’re running a Friends & Family Referral Competition, and the prize is a limited-edition Brompton C-Line 6-Speed bike, worth £1,450.

Refer someone to Jones And Co., and you’ll both be entered to win. It’s beautifully engineered, built for the city, and could completely change how you get from A to B.

We’ve already had some amazing referrals, thank you if you’ve taken part.

Just ask your friend to mention your name when they book. That’s it. You’ll both be entered in the draw!

đŸ‡Ș🇾 If You're After a Weekend Break with a Twist

If you’re a lover of Spanish food, here’s a little opportunity you’ll want to know about. One of the team is heading to the Andalusian hills this September to cook for a small group of guests — and you’re invited.

Earlier this month, Rory (who works back of house, and looks after our marketing and design work) swapped his MacBook for a chef’s knife and cooked a seven-course Andalusian dinner at a boutique hotel in the hills of southern Spain.

It was a trial run for a three-day gastro weekend taking place this September, and a chance for ten lucky guests to be the first to try his take on the region’s flavours.

Before joining Jones And Co., Rory spent 16 years in the hospitality industry, and he jumped at the chance to show off his culinary skills in the kitchen once again.

So he’s going back — this time with a full weekend menu built around seasonal produce, clean Mediterranean flavours, and locally sourced specialities. It’s a small, intimate weekend, a handful of food-loving guests, a beautiful old house, and thoughtfully prepared food designed to make you fall a bit in love with Andalucía.

If that sounds like your kind of escape, you can contact the hotel directly for full details: almohalla51.com
